Foundations in Botanical Health is an in-depth immersive educational opportunity to regain traditional knowledge about daily health. While pathology and pathophysiology will be discussed, the focus is on how to live a life of abundant health instead of one on “herbal medicine”. Foundations in Botanical Health is taught from the perspective of Dawn Combs, an ethnobotanist with over 20 years experience in her field. As a result, the education at Mockingbird Meadows is practical and based in an understanding of plant physiology as a starting point for every lesson.
The nature of Mockingbird Meadows has much to do with how this course is designed. The farm is a multifaceted operation, home to a professional author and professional speaker, a nationally distributed product line, an apiary, an FDA and ODA registered and inspected commercial kitchen and facility, the largest inspected ambient drying facility in the state of Ohio, a United Plant Savers (UpS) Botanical Sanctuary, a classroom and full-service apothecary serving the local community and a full-time learning lab. Education on the farm is intended to be a broad foundation for any way you may choose to use the information. Because of this, some of our students have started their own businesses. Others run their own clinical practices. Many simply use the information to care for themselves and their families.
Throughout history simple home remedies, whole foods and herbal knowledge were passed from one generation to another. Only with the recent popularity of Western Medicine has the sharing of knowledge through families been lost. Being able to use wild plants and grow the herbs and foods you need to maintain family health is an important skillset. Most of all, it will help you and your family become more self-sufficient with your health.
The texts for Foundations in Botanical Health are Dawn Combs’ written materials and Rosemary Gladstar’s, The Science and Art of Herbalism. In addition to your homework we will cover the foundations of herbalism, wild plant identification, medicinal herbology, herb gardening, herbal preparation, natural cosmetics, medicinal formulation, practical ceremony, the logistics of getting an herbal product to market, the legality of practice and the techniques of harvesting, drying and storing plants.
WHERE IS CLASS?
Each class is held at Mockingbird Meadows. Occasionally we will take field trips to surrounding wild areas. In total, you will spend two weeks on the farm over the one year period, split between two (week-long) sessions. Foundations in Botanical Health will include ten units of study. You will mail your homework to the farm for grading in the year between class sessions. All classroom work will be hands-on. You may spend time in the gardens, drying loft, commercial kitchen or processing area.

IS THIS A DEGREE?
Participants in Foundation in Botanical Health may choose to take the class merely for the education, or they may complete all the coursework and become a “Certified Herbalist”. Best of all, this program allows you to study with two herbalists and receive accreditation through both. This is not a degree. Upon successful completion within three years of study you will receive the following:
• Certificate of Completion from Rosemary Gladstar
• Certificate of Apprenticeship from Dawn Combs
In the United States, herbalism is still gaining credibility. While there are more and more university degrees that reference herbalism, this field is very much tied up in your “pedigree”. Because Rosemary Gladstar and Dawn Combs are both well respected herbalists, Foundations in Botanical Health is recognized as a rigorous and thorough education.
**Please note: This is an intensive study program and there will be homework and lab work outside of class. You are welcome to participate just for the lectures and hands-on class experiences. However, you will need to satisfactorily complete all outside work in order to graduate and receive your certifications.
ALREADY HAVE THE COURSE MATERIAL?
We hear from people all the time that they started the Home Study Course but never finished. Almost all of them found out that individual study was difficult and lonely. If this has happened to you, join us! Because you will not need to re-purchase some of your course materials, we are offering a discount ($150). You will still receive a Certificate of Completion from Rosemary Gladstar along with a Certificate of Apprenticeship from Mockingbird Meadows. Instead of sending away your homework, you simply send it to us at the farm. As a result, you tend to receive more interaction and personal feedback on your work.
