Foundations in Botanical Health is an in-depth immersive educational opportunity to regain traditional knowledge about daily health. While pathology and pathophysiology will be discussed, the focus is on how to live a life of abundant health instead of one on “herbal medicine”. Foundations in Botanical Health is taught from the perspective of Dawn Combs, an ethnobotanist with over 20 years experience in her field. As a result, the education at Mockingbird Meadows is practical and based in an understanding of plant physiology as a starting point for every lesson.

The nature of Mockingbird Meadows has much to do with how this course is designed. The farm is a multifaceted operation, home to a professional author and professional speaker, a nationally distributed product line, an apiary, an FDA and ODA registered and inspected commercial kitchen and facility, the largest inspected ambient drying facility in the state of Ohio, a United Plant Savers (UpS) Botanical Sanctuary, a classroom and full-service apothecary serving the local community and a full-time learning lab. Education on the farm is intended to be a broad foundation for any way you may choose to use the information. Because of this, some of our students have started their own businesses. Others run their own clinical practices. Many simply use the information to care for themselves and their families.

Throughout history simple home remedies, whole foods and herbal knowledge were passed from one generation to another. Only with the recent popularity of Western Medicine has the sharing of knowledge through families been lost. Being able to use wild plants and grow the herbs and foods you need to maintain family health is an important skillset. Most of all, it will help you and your family become more self-sufficient with your health.

TEXTS:

The texts for Foundations in Botanical Health are Dawn Combs’ written materials and Rosemary Gladstar’s, The Science and Art of Herbalism. In addition to your homework we will cover the foundations of herbalism, wild plant identification, medicinal herbology, herb gardening, herbal preparation, natural cosmetics, medicinal formulation, practical ceremony, the logistics of getting an herbal product to market, the legality of practice and the techniques of harvesting, drying and storing plants.

WHERE IS CLASS?

Each class is held at Mockingbird Meadows. Occasionally we will take field trips to surrounding wild areas. In total, you will spend two weeks on the farm over the one year period, split between two (week-long) sessions. Foundations in Botanical Health will include ten units of study. You will mail your homework to the farm for grading in the year between class sessions. All classroom work will be hands-on. You may spend time in the gardens, drying loft, commercial kitchen or processing area.

IS THIS A DEGREE?

Participants in Foundation in Botanical Health may choose to take the class merely for the education, or they may complete all the coursework and become a “Certified Herbalist”. Best of all, this program allows you to study with two herbalists and receive accreditation through both. This is not a degree. Upon successful completion within three years of study you will receive the following:

• Certificate of Completion from Rosemary Gladstar
• Certificate of Apprenticeship from Dawn Combs

In the United States, herbalism is still gaining credibility. While there are more and more university degrees that reference herbalism, this field is very much tied up in your “pedigree”. Because Rosemary Gladstar and Dawn Combs are both well respected herbalists, Foundations in Botanical Health is recognized as a rigorous and thorough education.

**Please note: This is an intensive study program and there will be homework and lab work outside of class. You are welcome to participate just for the lectures and hands-on class experiences. However, you will need to satisfactorily complete all outside work in order to graduate and receive your certifications.

We wanted to find a way to come back each year just to see one another. The farm is beautiful and Dawn’s family is great. You can do it at your own pace. Taking the Foundations in Botanical Health Course with Dawn at Mockingbird Meadows is one of the best experiences I’ve ever given myself. Due to the immersive and hands on nature of the program, I felt like my knowledge and understanding of the herbal world expanded exponentially during my time on the farm. Learning at Mockingbird Meadows takes the information that you read in herbal books and brings it to life in both a tangible and very magical way. Dawn is a wealth of herbal wisdom and knowledge, and the program is chock full of very useful information that you will carry with you for years to come. Having the opportunity to connect with like minded students is a huge added bonus!! If you are at all considering deepening your relationship with herbs and the plant world, I cannot recommend this course enough!

Taking the Foundations Course was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only do you learn a ton of information about herbs and their uses but you also build friendships that will last a lifetime. Dawn is an expert in herbalism but she also has the ability to meet every student where they are in their studies. She and her family are extremely generous with their time as well during the intensive. They cook meals for you, share their
knowledge, and accompany you on field trips around the state which add to the hands on experience. You meet like minded folks who are
making a living doing what they love. I can’t wait for my second year!

The Foundations in Botanical Health Course at Mockingbird Meadows is an excellent experiential education for aspiring herbalists or anyone yearning to learn more about self care utilizing the plants in our own back yards, parks, and world at large. Dawn is well versed in botany and herbology and is a lovely person to sit and learn with. This was the education I was searching for and found it right here in Central Ohio!

I took the course in 2014 when it was still in it’s infancy. It was a great course then and even now the support is still there a few years later. Dawn has been a great teacher and mentor and the knowledge that I gained from the program is something I’ve been able to use every single day. This course is great for anyone with an interest in herbalism, whether you wish to use it professionally or personally(or both). I highly recommend this course

The Foundations Course has been everything I wanted. The week-long intensive at the farm was amazing, and I learned so much. Dawn is a fantastic teacher, and it’s such a great opportunity to learn hands-on and ask lots of questions. The field trips were great too! Dawn and her family completely spoiled us with delicious, homemade meals and sharing their gorgeous farm. I was sad to leave them and all the other apprentices, and I’m so excited for my second week this year. My favorite part about the home study is that I can go at my own pace and jump around doing projects a little out of order if I want. It has made it very easy to fit into my schedule. I highly recommend this program for anyone who wants to get a solid herbal foundation either personally or professionally. I know that whatever my future career holds, I will be using the knowledge I gained at Mockingbird Meadows for the rest of my life to help keep myself and my loved ones healthy.

This course is challenging, intensive and life-altering. You will learn so much in such a short amount of time and not just book learning or listening to lectures – although there is plenty of that. You will create things, taste things, try things that you might never try on your own. This knowledge and these skills that Dawn is excellent at teaching, are so vital and useful. Not only will this affect your life, but it will affect those around you – your family and your friends will all gain from what you will have to offer them after completing this. Some of the people from my class have gone on to start their own businesses and continue their education towards becoming practitioners. I personally have kept my herbalism practice for myself and my loved ones and it has still been such an incredible experience – one that I will continue to benefit from and build on for the rest of my life.
